Though originally created for men in the 1800s and further popularized for women by Coco Chanel (ew) in the 1920s, bell bottoms truly had their moment to shine in the late 60s and throughout the 70s. Like crop tops, bell bottoms were initially hippie fashion and weren’t made mainstream until Sonny and Cher wore them on their show.
Sexual liberation was also a huge part of 70s fashion, as seen with crop tops. One huge example of this is the wrap dress. The creation of the wrap dress is often credited to diane von furstenberg, who designed her iconic dress after her divorce. Many women also began wearing more masculine clothing during the sexual liberation in the 70s, including patterned pant suits and tuxedos.
